Every digital payment you make on Khalti can now be your ticket to a daily Rs 1 lakh — or a fortnightly Rs 10 lakh — prize. Here’s how it works, and why it’s completely automatic.

Every time a purchase happens without a bill, a transaction quietly vanishes from the record — and so does the tax on it. Nepal’s Ministry of Finance is now trying to close that gap with an incentive rather than an inspection. And if you pay with Khalti, you are already part of it.

Under the Taxpayer Incentive Gift Program, 2083 (करदाता प्रोत्साहन उपहार कार्यक्रम, २०८३), run by the Inland Revenue Department, every eligible bill becomes a lottery ticket. When you pay digitally through Khalti, your qualifying purchases are entered automatically — no forms, no registration, nothing to remember.

Why paying with Khalti makes it effortless

The program has two ways to enter — and only one of them is automatic. If you pay in cash, you have to enter every bill yourself: invoice number, seller’s PAN, issue date, amount, your name, your mobile number, all typed into the Department’s portal within the draw period.

Pay with Khalti, and there is nothing to do. Because your payment goes through a licensed payment service provider, every qualifying purchase is entered into the draw automatically the moment your payment goes through. You just pay the way you already do — and you’re in.

Who qualifies

You’re eligible if you are a final consumer — an individual buying goods or services within Nepal for your own use — and the purchase is worth more than Rs 100 in a single transaction. Each eligible payment earns one gift ticket, and the more you pay digitally, the more chances you get.

What doesn’t count

  • Purchases made for business purposes
  • Invoices issued in the name of a government body or public institution
  • Telephone and internet services, electricity, vehicles and fuel, and air tickets
  • Purchases from a seller without a PAN

A single payment can be entered only once — duplicate entries of the same bill aren’t allowed.

When the draws happen

Winners are selected twice a month, on the 1st and the 16th. The draw on the 1st covers transactions from the 16th of the previous month to month-end; the draw on the 16th covers the 1st to the 15th of that month. An automated system picks one winner for each day in the period, plus one bumper winner every fortnight.

Winners are notified by mobile and email, and names are published on the Inland Revenue Department’s website and social media.

How to claim your prize

If you win, you have 15 days from the announcement date to apply at your nearest Inland Revenue Office — in person or through an authorized representative — with:

  • The original invoice
  • A copy of your national ID, citizenship, passport, or driving licence
  • Your bank account details
  • Your PAN

The office verifies everything and releases the gift within 10 days, paid directly into your bank account. One important reminder: prizes not claimed within the deadline are deposited into the Prime Minister’s Natural Disaster Relief Fund — so an unclaimed win is a lost win. Claim on time.

Why this matters — for you and for Nepal

A billed transaction is a recorded transaction, and recorded transactions widen the country’s tax base. The program’s purpose is simple: build a culture of giving and taking bills, improve tax compliance, and encourage genuine transaction records.

When you pay digitally with Khalti, you’re already doing exactly that — every payment is recorded, transparent, and formal. So each time you recharge, pay a bill, or scan to pay on Khalti, you’re not just getting things done. You’re contributing to a stronger, more formal economy — and getting a daily shot at Rs 1 lakh while you’re at it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register for the program?

No. If you pay digitally with Khalti, your entry is automatic. Only cash purchases require manual entry of the bill.

Can the same payment be entered twice?

No. Each qualifying payment counts once.

What if my purchase is exactly Rs 100?

The threshold is more than Rs 100, so a Rs 100 purchase doesn’t qualify. Anything above Rs 100 does.

How will I know if I’ve won?

By mobile and email. Winner names are also published on the Inland Revenue Department’s website and social media.

Pay digitally with Khalti — and you’re entered automatically. Every payment, every day.
