Providing exposure opportunity to young Nepali scientists
I was extremely glad to hear about Nepali Engineering students making Danfe, first aircraft made in Nepal. It got a wonderful media coverage. However, as I knew later that the makers had to dump it because of lack of support, I felt very sad, as it had taken a lot of hard work. Not many people did get an opportunity to see the plane. I was skeptic if we also might need to dump our robots like the seniors or at least to limit our innovations inside the laboratory.
BattleBot competition was conceived last year to take our project works to the general public, and exhibit the achievement of Nepali engineers. This event will provide a platform for young enthusiast engineers to showcase and exhibit their products to the masses and let the people know what our engineering students are doing.
Upendra Dhungana, a student of engineering at Khwopa Engineering College and member of Online Media Group (OMG) narrated the story of starting BattleBot in Nepal in a recent conversation with the Khalti team.
OMG, a group of social media groups in Nepal like Troll Nepal, Meme Nepal, and Routine of Nepal Banda had taken an initiative to host the event on last year’s CAN InfoTech. They had initiated the concept of doing something useful out of the pool of energetic youths in social media. A total of 8 teams had participated in the one-day competition. The competition held on the final day of the event was a huge crowd puller and got a very good response from the public.
The simple try last year had turned out to be a grand success, making them prepare a calendar to host the event every year.
On the sidelines of CAN InfoTech 2018, OMG and Astronomers Club Nepal are set to jointly host Battle Bot 2.0 competition.
This year, the competition is being held in two categories: Small Weight Robo Fight (2 Kg in size), and Manual Destructive Robo Fight (10 Kg).
As many as 18 teams, comprising of school and college-level robot enthusiasts are participating in the competition this year. This time, the competition will run for two days, from January 28-30. Popular Nepali artists including MaHa duo, Deepak Raj Giri, Anmol KC among others will be coming to the exhibition to inspire and support the young enthusiasts on robotics.
The winners in each of the categories in the competition will be awarded a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 whereas runner-up will bag Rs. 5000.
